Rio Grande City Public Library

Rio Grande Herald E-mail

The Rio Grande City Public Library was given paper copies of the Rio Grande Herald from 1972 – Apr 28, 2010 when it ceased publication [with gaps in holdings]. It was in the best interest of our community to try to preserve these newspapers so our patrons could access them. Some of the earlier 1970’s newspapers were in fragile condition and would not stand up to use by library patrons. We worked closely with the University of North Texas (UNT) Portal to Texas History and Texas Digital Newspaper Program to get the Rio Grande Herald’s digitized. It took nearly two years  it was a long process first we had to count not only the issues but the pages per issue. A very special thank you to a great library staff Leticia Guerra, Stephanie Grigsby, Staci Lopez, Margarita Reyna and volunteer Abelardo Hernandez. The next step was to have them microfilmed and thanks to the City of Rio Grande City Commission we were able to pay for that. To get the Rio Grande Herald in digital format we needed $18,540. Rescuing Texas History through UNT awarded the financial support needed and now they will host images on the Portal to Texas History, for free and open access. You may search online anytime day or night.
